The cost depends on what you qualify for. For example, a 65 year old male might pay anywhere from $20 to over $400 per month for a $40,000 policy. Without knowing your eligibility, it is not possible to give an exact price.

Does my coverage expire at age 80?

What is an IUL in plain language?

Indexed universal life is permanent life insurance with a cash value account tied to the performance of a market index such as the S&P 500. Your family gets a death benefit for life, and the cash side can grow when the index goes up.

Can I lose money in an IUL when the market drops?

Most IUL contracts carry a floor, usually zero percent, so a losing year in the index does not subtract from your cash value. You do still pay the policy charges and fees in those years, which is why funding the policy correctly matters.

What is a cap and a participation rate?

The cap is the maximum interest your cash value can be credited in a period, and the participation rate is the share of the index gain you receive. If the index returns 18 percent and your cap is 10 percent, you are credited 10 percent. That tradeoff is what pays for the downside floor.

How is an IUL different from term insurance?

Term covers you for a set number of years and then ends with nothing. An IUL is built to last your whole life, builds cash value, and does not expire on a birthday.

Can I borrow against the cash value?

Yes. Once cash value builds you can take policy loans or withdrawals, often without a credit check. Loans reduce the death benefit until they are repaid, so this should be planned with your advisor.

Is an IUL right for every veteran?

No. If your budget is tight and you mainly need burial money, a small final expense whole life plan is usually the better fit. An IUL makes sense when you want lifetime coverage plus a tax advantaged place to build cash. We will tell you straight which one fits.

Question 11

Does an IUL affect my VA benefits?

No. Private life insurance is separate from VA compensation, pension, and health care. Owning a policy does not reduce your disability rating or your benefits.
